Why are we attempting to "Nation Build" in Afghanistan? Haven't we learned from the past?

Everyone avoids the issue or the name, but for lack of a better word that is what we are doing. It will never work. Look at where Operation Ajax got us with Iran and the British and French added to the mess in the Middle East with the Sykes–Picot Agreement back in 1916. Will we ever learn?
