How do i gain my cat's trust back?

I put a cross neckl on my cat and folded it over so it would be on his chest instead of dragging on the ground, (he looked very holy) and he nearly strangled himself. my sister told me he was gasping for breath and slobbering everywhere. now my cat's afraid of me. how do i get his trust back?
